The general conformity substrate is robust: Bond & Smith's (1996) meta-analysis of 133 Asch-line studies across 17 countries found conformity reliably present but moderated by culture (higher in collectivist societies) and declining over decades, indicating it is not a fixed constant. The specifically political bandwagon effect is weaker and contested: Farjam (2020) found ~7% in a controlled experiment, but the large-scale Dutch survey experiment by van der Meer, Hakhverdian & Aaldering (2016, N~23,000+) found only a subtle effect tied to perceived growth and no general effect of raw poll outcomes - the same authors later likened the political bandwagon effect to the 'Loch Ness Monster.' Barnfield (2020) attributes much of the inconsistency to conceptual confusion rather than a stable underlying effect.

Two non-exclusive mechanisms are standard. Informational social influence (rational herding / information cascades): the popularity of an option is treated as evidence that it is good, so observers infer others know something and copy them even against private information (Bikhchandani, Hirshleifer & Welch 1992; Deutsch & Gerard 1955). Normative social influence: people align with the majority to gain approval and avoid the discomfort of dissent (Asch 1951; Deutsch & Gerard 1955). Leibenstein's original economic framing adds a demand-externality account: an individual's willingness to consume rises mechanically with others' consumption (desire to be in style / belong).
Competing account — In political science the 'bandwagon effect' is conceptually contested. Barnfield (2020) argues the literature conflates distinct phenomena - it must be separated from the underdog effect (favoring the losing side), strategic/tactical voting, the spiral of silence, and mere projection (assuming the popular view is one's own). Whether observed poll-following reflects genuine preference change vs strategic calculation vs measurement artifact remains disputed.

To break the chain
Evaluate the option against fixed criteria before looking at any popularity signal, and ask 'would I choose this if I didn't know others had?' Separate the two reasons a crowd might agree (they each have private evidence vs they are all copying one early mover); a cascade can be large yet fragile and information-poor. In group settings, solicit independent judgments privately first (as in Deutsch & Gerard's anonymity conditions) to blunt normative pressure.
Asch's control condition (judging alone) produced under 1% error vs ~32-37% under majority pressure, and Deutsch & Gerard showed reducing normative pressure (anonymity) cuts conformity - so eliciting independent judgments before exposure to the majority demonstrably reduces the effect.
Catch it in the act
A recommendation rests on how many others already chose it ("best-selling," "most popular," "everyone's switching to X," "leading in the polls") rather than on the option's merits. Watch for the inference that popularity is itself evidence of quality, and for preferences that shift the moment popularity figures are revealed.
